The Urakami Cathedral was completed in 1914 after Catholic believers has worked on it for thirty years, brick by brick. Parts of the walls still stand. The cathedral reconstructed in 1959; in 1980, it was remodeled with brick tiles and restored to its original appearance. Visitors to the cathedral today can view bombed remnants of stone statues and the single bell that withstood the atomic bomb blast that tolls three times a day to announce the hour.
